There’s a few things you can always count on in San Diego. A good street taco, mid-seventies temperatures and of course, surf. It seems like an obvious concept, but we’ve never had a show at Subtext that celebrates the constant tide that San Diego bestows on us. You should’ve been here yesterday is our first surf-inspired group exhibition that will feature new works from San Diego artists and photographers including Myles McGuinnessKevin RocheSusan WickstrandPaul DrohanPhil GibbsJohn AntoskiSkye WalkerEmil KozakTocayoChris Park , Dane Danner, John DurantJosh Oldenburg, & William Sager. Join us at Subtext this Spring for what is sure to be a killer lineup.

View the Work

Last Friday night there were many shapes and even more smiles as we welcomed Jolby back to the walls of Subtext. We cannot describe to you what a pleasure it is to work with these two wonderful artists. They put their heart and soul into everything they do, and the reaction to their work was a joy to see. People packed the gallery to get a glimpse of Shapes & Smiles, and there were lots of red dots claiming wall space next to those pieces that found a new home. If you missed out, be sure to email us here for an appointment. There’s still a handful of really great pieces. More photos of opening night after the jump.

Returning for their second solo show at Subtext, these seasoned creators will guide us on a voyage through their past, present, and everything inbetween to find out what makes them happy. For Shapes & Smiles, Jolby has been exploring new ways of storytelling through drawings, paintings, wood-cut shapes, screen prints, plush, home goods, and more.
