Fragments & Phantoms

Fragments & Phantoms
New Works from Tim Maclean
July 14th – August 31st, 2012
Opening Reception: Saturday, July 14th, 6-10pm
Live Performance by Sundrop Electric at 9pm

We’re really excited about our upcoming show that is opening Saturday, July 14th during Comic Con weekend. Hailing from the Highlands of Scotland, Tim Maclean is an internationally exhibited artist who creates colorful and engaging, figurative works with a surreal twist. Tim has long been fascinated by the mystery of consciousness and how it is shaped by language and culture. In Fragments & Phantoms (his first solo exhibition), he explores the landscapes of mental realms, where the conscious and unconscious connect and archetypal patterns expand and converge. Maclean’s paintings are often populated with characters and figures inspired by the ages of pop culture, history, myth, and his own unique imagination supplies the rest.

Spaces in Between
New Works by Scott Saw
June 8th – July 6th, 2012
Opening Reception: Friday, June 8th, 6-10pm

Scott Saw is an artist we’ve had the pleasure of showing many times over the years, but this marks our first solo exhibition with the San Diego native. His unmistakable work is a rich exploration of color and pattern inspired by space, nature, love and death. At its core, his creations are spiritual, energetic, vibrant, and most of all, cerebral. Spaces in Between will examine Saw’s recent life experiences, mixed subconscious interpretations of the afterlife, and will make us question what lies beneath the surface as we dive in and explore.

Art Auction and Raffle at Subtext: April 21st!

For he’s a Jeffery good fellow!
Art Auction & Raffle benefitting Jeff Adkins
Saturday, April 21st, 2012, 6:30-10pm

This January, a good friend of Subtext, Jeff Adkins, was hit by an oncoming car while riding his motorcycle. As a result, he’s now paralyzed from the chest down. And while he’s currently making great progress in rehab, he’s still got a long road (and a mountain of medical bills) ahead of him. To help, Subtext is hosting an art auction and raffle with all proceeds benefitting Jeff and his family. We’ve made some amazing relationships with our artists over the past 6 years, and many have been generous enough to donate pieces for this event. So come out and bid on original artwork from nearly 50 of our favorite artists. And enter a chance to win prizes from Taylor Guitars,Hard Rock Hotel San DiegoRusty SurfboardsBottlecraftHyde-Edwards Salon, and many more. We’ll also have food from MIHO Gastrotruck, beverages from Ballast Point, and music throughout the night. We hope you can join us. We’ll have some really incredible pieces up for grabs. And it’s all for a great cause!

A Surf-inspired Group Exhibition
March 16th – April 13th, 2012
View the Work

Friday night was jam packed and well received as we paddled into an epic show featuring an eclectic mix of surf-inspired artwork. When we set out to do this show, we wanted to make sure we had a solid showing of work with varying styles, and we we’re really happy with the way it turned out. A huge thanks goes out to all of you who came out, and all of our artists that made this night a memorable one. And an extra special thanks to Summer Brooke and her band who battled the elements to give us a really beautiful musical performance. More photos of opening night after the jump.
