Douk-Douk

The other day, I ran across this very interesting knife called the Douk-Douk. I was really impressed by the vintage ornamental designs that were engraved on the blade and handle, and I was sure I was looking at an antique knife. I looked into it further, and as it turns out, they still manufacture these Douk-Douk knifes and the design hasn’t changed since the 1920s! The Douk-Douk has been manufactured by the M. C. Cognet cutlery firm in Thiers, France, since 1927. Popular in the former French colonies since 1929, and used by the Army and French Foreign Legion, Douk-Douk knives have a reputation of strength and reliability. Elegantly simple, the Douk-Douk is a single carbon steel blade with a folded steel handle that depicts a “douk-douk”, or Melanesian spirit incarnation. Needless to say, I bought one. A good design can last for ages, and this is a classic example.
