Dave Brown Day
Cocktails & Farewells at Starlite Lounge (back patio)
Tuesday, August 24th, 8pm

What can we say… this post is bittersweet. Our good friend Dave Brown (the founder of Holiday Matinee) is breaking up with San Diego, and reuniting with his old flame… New York. There are people you come across who are talkers, and people you come across that are doers. Mr. Brown is a doer. And in some way, shape, or form (weather you know it or not), he has done us all. Wait. He has touched us all. No…

Nevertheless, as of this Friday, he will be on his way to Brooklyn where he is embarking on yet another chapter in the amazing book of Dave. So come have a drink with us at Starlite Lounge as we celebrate “Dave Brown Day”, and wish him a fond farewell. More details and RSVP here.

And Dave, we’ll miss you buddy. Subtext loves you.

Damages: New Works by N.C. Winters
September 10th – October 10th, 2010
Opening Reception with the Artist: Friday, September 10th, 6-10pm

Here’s a teaser of N.C. Winter’s work for our upcoming Damages show that opens on September 10th. We’ve seen a lot of great work from N.C. over the years, but this is his best work to date so be sure to come see them in person. More photos after the jump.

About the Show: Damages is Winters’ first solo exhibition with Subtext, in which he has created a collection of paintings that interpret the feelings of disrepair, sacrifice and loss wrapped in N.C.’s definitive style. The vibrant colors, raw textures, and enchanting characters found in his work introduces his unique point of view that often incorporates the juxtoposition of disparate themes in a very graphic, yet highly illustrative approach.

LOOK: The Work of Grant Brittain & Josh Higgins
July 30th – August 28th, 2010

A huge thanks goes out to Grant Brittain and Josh Higgins who not only put together an incredible body of work for their first show at Subtext, but also helped organize two stellar receptions! We’d also like to send some love to the many people who made these events possible: The Tractor Room, Bull Taco, Nixon, Chrome, ID-Prints, Grind for Life, and of course Adrian Demain who provided the melodic atmosphere for both receptions. If you missed the show, and would still like to see it (before it ends on the 28th), contact us here. More photos from the receptions after the jump.

About the Show: Different artists, different mediums, different content. But the song remains the same (or at least similar). Friends and fellow artists Grant Brittain and Josh Higgins will grace the walls of Subtext in a joint venture of unrelated themes. Brittain’s portraiture of some of skateboarding’s greatest names through the years features icons and underground heroes. Higgins’ poster-art focuses on his work with punkers, musical heros, and charitable causes. Together, the collective work suggests what it would be like to eavesdrop on these guys hanging out, having a beer, and comparing broken wrists and paper cuts. LOOK: A dialogue for your eyes. At Subtext this summer.
